Welcome to Heidi in Houston
As I sit down to write this blog, I’m filled with a deep sense of purpose and nostalgia. I’ve been a collector of memories for as long as I can remember, a habit lovingly passed down from my mother. She was always behind the camera, capturing every Kodak moment, from reel-to-reel tapes to today’s digital snapshots. That passion for preserving family history has lived on through generations, and today, I find myself the keeper of a growing treasure trove of memories.
I hold not only my own story but those of my grandmothers, too, letters, postcards, and cherished mementos from lives well lived. Being the gatekeeper of such rich history feels like a sacred responsibility, one I can no longer keep tucked away in boxes and hard drives.
A few experiences recently lit a fire under this effort. Losing access to my Facebook account was a wake-up call, reminding me just how fragile our digital memories are. Not long after, I traveled to Europe and visited my father’s birthplace, a moving experience that deepened my desire to honor where we come from.
That mix of loss and rediscovery brought me back to Heidi in Houston, a blog I started nearly 20 years ago. What began as a simple creative outlet has grown into something more meaningful, a place to protect our memories, celebrate our roots, and document the stories that make us who we are.
My goal is simple yet powerful: to organize, preserve, and share our family’s history for future generations. I want my children, and their children, to have a window into our past and a deeper connection to their heritage.
While my posts won’t always be chronological, each one is a piece of our family’s puzzle. Along the way, I’ll share tips for organizing photos, videos, and memorabilia, because I know I’m not the only one feeling overwhelmed by digital clutter and sentimental boxes gathering dust.
This blog is a labor of love, a way to make sure our memories aren’t lost to time or technology. Thank you for joining me on this journey of preservation, storytelling, and rediscovery.
With love,
Heidi
